Aperitivi in Milano

The best thing about Milano is the pre-dinner food and drinks. Most bars host apertivi, which is fundamentally a buffet with assorted munchies that are complementary with drinks. I highly recommend this website:
m i l a n o t o n i g h t.

My personal highlights were a local brewery and pub with an endless array of vegetable and pasta salads, and a more posh bar that had an apertivi bar filled with salmon and fried whipped potatoes.

Burano

Needing to escape the drab colors of the island, I took the LN vaporetto from the Fondamenta Nuova stop to one of Venice's islands: Burano. The ride left my cheeks rosy from over half an hour of beautiful blue skies and the sun's reflection on the water.

Burano is one of those places that leaves you chuckling at how happy it makes you and how absurd the whole thing is. The streets seem so rich and full of life with their burnt umber and royal blue facades, yet the streets were fairly silent with the exception of two elderly women shouting about laundry from across a canal.

We had lunch at an osteria overlooking a small piazza filled with teenaged school kids. My polenta and crayfish looked like mush, but tasted brilliant. I love that about Italian food-- it doesn't matter what it looks like because the taste speaks for itself.

Burano charmed me out of my shoes.

Libreria Acqua Alta is a bookstore near Campo Santa Maria Formosa that has gondolas and bathtubs overflowing with books.

Last week I took a day trip to Verona, and was basically rained out. All of the buildings and points of interest that I intended to see were closed or under restoration. Nevertheless, it was a lovely town, and I enjoyed myself.
